Irrational Games is the award winning developer of System Shock II and Freedom Force, games that feature in IGN’s top 100 games of all time. The company has studios in Boston, MA and Canberra, Australia. Founded in 1997, the company is dedicated to bringing deep RPG and strategy games to both the PC and next-generation console markets.

Irrational Boston is looking for a talented special effects artist to work on upcoming titles.
Candidates for the effects artist position at Irrational Studios in Quincy, MA, will have strong overall artistic abilities and be extremely self-motivated. They will have a strong traditional portfolio, as well as strong digital art skills. Getting the job done often means getting it done quickly, and under a tight deadline.

Responsibilities

· Creating particle systems that represent both realistic and imaginary effects. Some examples of these effects are:
o Explosions, smoke, and fire
o Flowing, splashing, and stagnant water
o Magical and ethereal effects
o Hit spangs and decals
· Concepting, story-boarding, or painting examples of FX.
· Working with art and programming leads to develop new features for particle systems in the Vengeance Engine.
· Painting textures and modeling meshes for particle FX.

Qualifications

· Proficient in 3D Studio Max.
· Proficient in Photoshop or Painter
· Strong animation skills apparent in portfolio.
· Strong traditional art skills (drawing, painting, or sculpture, etc…)
· 3D modeling and texturing skills a strong plus.
· Excellent organizational skills.
· Ability to work under Lead Artist, staying within aesthetics of game.
· Works well under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications

· Minimum 2 years experience in the games industry, shipped titles preferred.
· Unreal Engine particle system experience.
· Understanding of real time shaders; normal maps, specular maps, etc.
· Understanding of console memory limitations.

Portfolio submission

· CD, DVD, or URL preferred.
· Samples of traditional art, drawing, painting, or sculpture, etc.
· Samples of 3D models and textures.
· In-Game movies of shipped title FX – OPTIONAL.
