when creating low poly mechanical parts in max, is there any way to keep some of the straight edges after you bump it up an iteration to make it high poly? i have included a couple of images to illustrate what's going on.
low poly:
here it is after i bump it up an iteration. but don't want that extruded part on the surface to change shape. i want to keep those hard edges...it's like a latch type thingy. any advice? thanks.

may I point you to this superb tutorial by our very own Daz.
http://home.comcast.net/~dpattenden/hi_poly_tut.htm
read the first few pages it gives you the therory hi-poly and how the meshsmooth tool works.
Check out the cube bit specifically, take note of how many slices and lines are in it and recrete it for yourself...then try a more complicated shape keepign the same thory you learnt from the cube.
It becomes very easy after a short while to do hi-poly mechanical objects, you gotta learn how many cuts and slices to make and where to put them.
good luck!

But read the tutorial also.
thanks again.
