Recording Demos

Alright, I don't know if this is the right place to put this, but i guess i'll try to put it in an obvious spot.

I know in Quake3 and in Doom3 you can record your own demos... I was just wondering if you can record them in different formats? If i remember right you could only watch them from inside the engine? I'm working on a personal project and was wondering if there were any programs out there (if needed?) that could record a movie with sound?

fraps is in fact, awesome. I can record BF2 games with only a slight decrease in frames per second. the videos it creates are large, but high quality and the sound is great, and can be edited and compressed by programs like virtualdub.
