Does anyone know of a good review site with a large database of cars? i'm looking to buy a used 1986 toyota mr2, and i want to read up as much as i can on things that can go wrong or how hard it is to come by on parts.
Well you better find some big Toyota forum and ask them. Usually car forums are the best places to find out common mistakes (but beware some fanboys might ignore the reality and make some cars sound way better than they really are).
And before you buy take it to your closest Toyota dealer and ask them to check it out (supposing they do pre-purchase inspections).
Finally keep your head clear, sometimes you want the car so bad that you start to ignore obvious mistakes or are too optimistic about them.
IMHO the 1st gen MR2's look like boxes on wheels :P
my dad has one of the new ones, but I don't like them as much as the curvy, "supercar" looking middle model. I was actually thinking of getting one at some point myself! There's a guy with an electric blue targa-top 2nd gen MR2 down the street, really nice looking car...
yeah i hear you there mop, but because of my age i'm forced into an older body style (which isnt too too bad, i've got a thing for the wedge/boxy style 80's cars, delorean = dreamcar)
because insurance is going to cost me aprox. 6000$ a year for a new model, but for an 86 i'm droped to about 5000$ a year.

check out the history. buying a used car isn't so bad. just be prepared to buy parts for tune ups and replacements.
I would suggest www.toyotanation.com
a nice bunch of lads who know what they are talking about
