i dont think the render is sucky but if the crates where realistically scaled (they r very small relatively to grass/weapon) it would look better
only picky crit i can hope to give is that the text on the weapon looks a little ouf of place, i think just reduce the contrast (or layer opacity, prob same result) and it would be fine

Something I noticed as a bit weird is the stock (the bit at the opposite end of the barrel, anyway, I don't know technical terms! ) - it lacks a lot of contrast compared to the rest... you've got a lot of darks and pure black in the middle and around the front end, but at the back it's all midtone - maybe if you darkened the shadows and the holes in the stock it would be more consistent? It looks fine in the renders with the hard dark shadows, but if you're not raytracing shadows (like in a game for example) it'd probably look a little odd.
I also think you could give a better idea of depth on the greenish (plastic?) bit with the hand grip and drilled holes - the holes are just circles of pure black, if you did a nice gradient fade with correct cylinder shading in each of the 5 round holes on each side there, it'd look a lot more like real holes drilled in the plastic rather than just black dots or holes in paper.
Generally very good though, I'd be interested to see how it looked with a subtle GI bake and proper specular map?
As it is, your skins rock. I am curious if you could handle that all with next-gen stuff like specmaps and normalmaps. Give it a try and show us.
And, start modelling!
Overall though I'd say it's pretty damn nice
But, yeah that grass and them crates suck
How about some open ammo/gun cases to fill the background if you have to?
