You mean UVW mapping or landscape mapping?
I use 3dsmax 7 dissplace maps.
I get a Plane or low scaled cube with about 1000,2000 faces and apply dissplace modifier.
Next I open Photoshop or Painter or paintshop pro or whatever program you have and I Pick only black to white colors.
I Draw the basic outline of the landscape from a top view.
Then shade and smudge(very usefull for craters of ditches).
darker means deeper,lighet means higher.
Save as anything you want.
Open the dissplace map in 3dsmax and play with settings.
The more Faces the cube has or the higher res the better it looks.
If you are looking to break laws of physics...use more cubes and maps and scale them up.
Dissplace maps need pratice to look diverse and unique.
Hope I helped...
Sorry landscaping. I'll try that when I get home. What I'd wanted to do was create a world that has had continent sized chunks of other worlds inserted into its surface. I wanted to know what this would do to the weather and such.
