Newtek-Lightwave 9
LW 9 will have real and total support for edge manipulation, as well as the modeling tools set is now acessible in Layout for those of you that want a single work environment! There are now also sub-d modeling with n-gons as well as faster sub-d surfaces in general.

As much as i hate you for saying this, i agree with you, someone finally nailed my thoughts in about 5 lines in a discussion forum.
Remember kids before you upgrade it took Newtek about 10 releases and 18 years of existance to poop those features.
It's a little sad they're only just realising thier product is actually being used for more than pretty pictures now.
I miss my Amiga
Hopefully this is a sign of much better things to come in the future. I've long since resigned myself to the fact that they'd have to play some serious catch-up with the rest of the industry, but it would seem that 9.0 will actually allow them to start moving forward finally.
I'd rather see them fight it out than die altogether, as there are still some valuable tools in LW today.
All else aside, I'm happy to see this stuff too. People always hear me baggin' on LW but it doesn't change the fact that I still use it. I only bitch cuz I care! =D
I'm pretty sure LW has the oldest UI in the industry.

Lightwave's Interface is one of the more modern aspects of it. Isn't the oldest interface though, there's 2 that are older.
Caligari 24 (aka Caligari trueSpace)
Alias Maya
The original Lightwave on the Amiga was fun, very interesting design too. Anyone used to the modern Interface would be relatively lost, no doubt.
If I recall though it was the first ever to use a 3D Accelerator Card, which was called 'Video Toaster'. Was an add-on card for the A1200, A2000, A4000. Later surpassed by Picasso. Ah good times.
I'm more excited about modo 2

And yeah... the modo update looks like the most significant at siggraph so far - in terms of pure modeling enhancements.
I could have sworn that Maya was power animator first and LW was still LW at the time... color me wrong then! =]

the technical history is a little, well confusing.
As you may have noticed, Maya has no 1.0 or 2.0 designations. The first version of the software to get numbered was 3.
Historically speaking you have Alias/1 and Alias/2 from Alias, and PowerAnimator from Wavefront.
When Alias|Wavefront merged to create Maya, both technologies were used, but the User-Interface was inherited from Alias.
Technically speaking the first release of Maya was Alias/3, given the project was started before the merger.
you know what gets me is how long Siggraph has been doing, just astounding.
