Hey, I was just looking at the Maya help info on it's Paint Effects thing. I was wondering how useful these are and if it's really worth learning at all? (I use Maya 6.5 complete)
Well it depends on what your trying to achieve.
The tools are almost exclusively for CGI work, and to that end they do make your job one hell of a lot easier.
What the paint effects are, is a way of providing an artistic way to add particle effects. Once added you can them script them to react with the scene, which is a bit harder to get used to doing but again invalueable when wanting to add wind or something.
This scene is just me messing for 3-4seconds with the Paint Effects. Simple clumpy grass and fire. As you can use your tablet (as it accepts pressure) you can literally paint particle effects exactly how you want them into a scene.

After that to attach them to a surface simply use the Outliner.
