Okay....This is my first post so bear with me. I am in the process of learning both HTML and dreamweaver....so..... hopefully everything works. This is a project I am working on for one of my classes. It's a gargoyle character. I plan on completing the body in the next week or so. But for now all I have is the incomplete head. I still have a couple of structural issues I need to work out before animating (i.e. muscle structure around the eyes) but wanted to get some feedback before I do anything more. Hope you guys like it. http://stu.aii.edu/~rnl311/frontwire.htm http://stu.aii.edu/~rnl311/smoothedperspective.htm http://stu.aii.edu/~rnl311/800x600Gargoyle.htm
Steady- I am in the Media Arts and Animation program. I think tuition is like 70 grand or so and class size range from like 3 or 4 to 20. They offer BA degrees which is the main reason I decided to go. I love it!!! You should check out the website if you are interested...www.aiw.artinstitutes.edu
Quake- I used reference pics of apes and gargoyles both to come up with my concept so go figure.
Lazyboy- Yes I do play CS. The game kicks ass!!!!!!
I can't offer much help since I'm shite with characters, but I think it looks more like a monkey than a gargoyle.
Also, stay away from gargoyles, otherwise Cheapalert will kill ya
hmmmm.....okay so you all think it looks like a ape/monkey sorta being, mmmmm, than what can I do in order to make appear more gargoylish like? Also, what about the structure and quality of the mesh? Any pointers, tips, etc.???
Anyhow, some of the basic things that make a gargoyle what it is:
- ALWAYS have wings!
- Have legs strong enough to jump past 1.8 cars
- The ability to squat for long, long long periods of time (they are quite good shitters IMO)
- Most of them have a very human body, with a bunch of crotesqueness features added on and mixed in, such as spikes, horns, long pointed ears, long foreskin, etc. Also, look at the other gargoyle threads among Polycount and inspect each one's differences, see which features make them unique.
Show me a game that has a "grotesque" for a monster :P
nah the term gargoyle has been used more often it shouldn't really go by ONLY the original waterspout definition anymore. Besides, gargoyle is a sexy word and more used as a noun than grotesque used as an adjective. Gargoyle makes fun puns like gargoyling on a gargoyle's gargoyle.
Cheap Alert- Thanks for the post....it gave me a much better idea as to how a gargoyle should look...or could look (There were so many img's on there, it served as a wonderful reference) Thanks again! I'm gonna post some more images of my WIP. Hook me up with some good feedback.
Surgey- I purposely left the mouth open for animation purposes.
Elsyium- This is my second modeling course....I have been at the school a little over a year. First year was mostly fundamental art courses such as life drawing, sculpture, etc. I now am getting into the meat and potatos of the program and learning 3ds Max as well as others. I love it....its a great program.
Here is some updated shots of my soon to be gargoyle. I added horns and ears and reworked the cage flow in order to have a more solid structure for animating. To create a more solid cage I got rid of any excessive polys and most of my triangles...the few that are left are in insignificant areas. I ended up with a low poly version @ around 544 faces & a high poly version @ around 4308. Take a look a the pics and let me know what you guys think. Hopefully it's starting to look more like a gargolye than an ape.

i agree though, this fella looks too ape-like at the moment.
