Figured I might as well post over here too, since some of you don't visit the CGChat forums, and I haven't posted any stuff in ages...
The nocturnal Tarsier warrior uses his staff and sling to throw poisonous beetles which explode on impact, releasing noxious fumes that incapacitate his enemies.
His armour is made from wood and organic material harvested from his habitat, the dense forest.
Although only 3 1/2 feet tall, he is cunning and nimble, and eats seafood.
Contest regulations were 4000 triangles, 2 512x512 textures and a single 256x256 texture. Diffuse, specular, opacity & bump maps were allowed, but we decided against bump/normal mapping this one.

I did have to rush the textures a bit due to other commitments and generally being lazy, but I think he turned out pretty well. This stuff always goes a lot better when you have such a good concept to work from

the mesh's face seems to be a little more...... top heavy than the concept, like there is too much head going into the ears, and its a bit wide at the top.
that aside, it came together nicely. kickass stuff mop.tully!
I really love what you did with the alpha planes.
2 things for me :
- I prefer the neck area on the concept, which gives a smaller/roguish/malicious head feeling. I don't really feel that in the 3d Version. Also, the snout is maybe a little bit flat, it removes a bit of character too (maybe the angle?)
- Well, I consider that it's not easy @ all to get some good texture feeling especially for fur. But I think you could maybe work a little bit more on it by giving it a more present hair feeling. You know, atm, when I take a look @ the legs, it looks like fur mixed with wood or something. (I think that the specular addition doesn't help for fur feeling btw).
Anyways, these 2 points are minor on the whole thing and it's definitly a great entry you got there !
Good luck !
-Renaud
The only thing that bothers me is it's hands and feet. It looks like it has frog legs hands and feet, which makes it seem very inconsistant. I think if little claws were added it would make it looks much better.
moose: Yep, I agree about the head... I did a lot of tweaking on it but I never managed to get it quite accurate to the concept, although I still think it looks fine if you look at them seperately. Eventually just got tired of messing around with it and moved onto a different area
Renaud: Yep, like I say, I didn't quite get the head right... ah well.
You're right about the legs too - that's also an area I gave up on. Basically I did most of the fur texture today, so it was kinda rushed, and I didn't really enjoy working on it, because I couldn't get the effect I wanted and didn't really have time to fix it. I know what to look out for in future now!
Neo_God: Thanks. I actually like the hands and feet as they are now, since they're pretty accurate to a real Tarsier's hands and feet. They have really weird and cool fingers. It's what Spielberg based E.T. around.

Oh, you're too modest! You've done a great job and you know it. Bask in praise! Bask I say! If need be, I'll do more concepts for you so you post and everybody else can see your lovely work more often :P We did say something about a dragon, didn't we?
And thanks for the praise, guys! I've lately been worrying that my design skills are lacking compared to my rendering, but maybe I should just shut up, do more work and see how it turns out.
great job to the both of you.
it's bitchin
i kinda like the animal theme that some people are taking on as of lately
Thats some nice work indeed, Mop. I will agreee that theres something about the head or neck region that feels like it needs a tiny tweak... perhaps slightly bigger cheek pouches?
I love the chain/belt with the beetles and his hands!
very nice job you two,
charmingly unpretentious as always mop
i think the eyes on the model (which r very important, being the only focal point and all) are too opaque. should be darker inside, like in tully's concept and the ref.
great texture work too.
and that little tarsier is so cute!
Its a good peice Mop/Tully
I like the cool pale shading in the concept, good work

Oh wow, my bad, well I retract my crit then!
Still Great stuff!
congratulations you two
I no further crits than what's above regarding the head.
MOP well don, but I think the error in the head is simply that you have the sihouette about right in the side view, but in the front view the head and neck are supposed to be the same diameter, and the leds, just overall thicker, the shape being a bit more humanoid and less Tarsier, But still , it's a tight clean model and very nicely done.
