Art books.

Hello ppl. Im thinking of spending a few dollars
ordering some art books. Stuff like Frazettas Icon
etc. Im also looking for some more modern
conceptual design. I know ballistic publishing
have a few good books.

Any suggestions on what I should buy?

I dont have it, but I've heard nothing but good things about the oddworld art book. If you like their style, then you should probably pick it up.

Personally my favorite artbook is Brom's Darkwerks. But I just love Brom's shit. Art is after all, largely a matter of preference.

i've got Brom's Offerings, Ugetsu Hakua's Flamboyant, Hyung-Tae Kim's Oxide 2x, Psikyo Visualworks poster book, Character Design Bible 5, Katsuya Terada's Rakugaking, and two Discworld art books.
Out of those, I'd recommmend Flamboyant, Oxide 2x and Rakugaking. The bible isn't quite an artbook, but it's got loads of good art and a few tutorials, the most notable being Terada's.

Akira Animation archive is the best book ive got I think . Also Final Fantasy 9 art book is very nice . Patlabor art books are really good . Ghost in the shell art book is really good . All of the Miazaki art books especially Howl's moving castle are really good . Best place to find this stuff is Anime Conventions..the bigger the better !

Rakugaking seems very nice, i might get that. Capcom Design Works is pretty cool as well, same goes for All About SNK (though the images in this book seem to be drawn by females, lot's of pretty boy drawings and drawings of couples...i didnt think it was fitting for the fighting game characters but very nice nevertheless). Another book i've been trying to get a hold of is "Guilty Gear X: Drafting artworks", which also looks very nice, imo. Serial Experiments: Lain artbook is really pretty as well.

It's a good idea to make one big list out of all these tips, since i definitely want to buy some of these.

Edit: Ordered Guilty Gear X: Drafting Artworks and Rakuga King from a german website. 75 euro

Got the odd world book right beside me here at work. Freaking awesome i say.....every character drawn sooo detailed a pretty.

Intron Depot 4 was really dissapointing, IMO. I used Ballistics regularly as reference while I was doing gun work on Snowblind.

If you want conceptual design, especially digital, I'd recommend the art of Episode 3 book. There are some amazing speed paintings in there, and most of it is digital. I have the Oddworld book, and few others from Ballistic like Expose 1, and the D'Artiste: Digital Painting book. They're all pretty good, if a tad expensive.

If you're looking for general concepts and lots of variety, the Spectrum illustration series is a good value. Lots of different styles, and good quality compositions.

For game related stuff, I really like the art of Half Life 2 book. It's cheap and full of good info. I also like a book called Japanese Game Graphics. Another good one for character deisgn/color palettes is the art of Phantasy Star Online. You should be able to find it on one of the anime bookseller sites.

Great thread. When I moved the movers lost 1 box. Just happened to be the box with my stereo speakers and all my art books. Luckily I got insurance. Once I jump through all the hoops to get some money out of them I'll hopefully be able to get some books.
