Try putting the subobject on a different layer and then click the hide button in the layer manager. That should cut whatever it was from the render.
Either that or write some sort of script that applies a completely transparent + no specular material to the selection whenever you Hide it... it'd have to be bound to a hotkey, and apply the original material again when they're unhidden...
Yep, detaching it is probably the easiest way to deal with it. I got bit by that once working with someone else's model. I couldn't figure out why these stray polygons kept showing up in the render. Finally figured it out, but it took me a while.
Unfortunately the model was already rigged. So if I tried detaching It'd screw up all the vertice weighting. So I just ended up applying a 100% transparent material to it :P
