Shacknews has posted up some stuff from Gears of War that pretty much totally kicks ass and maybe will give you some insperation for the day . Im ready for this game now and I can't wait to make a MOD character for it
/me watches as the Earth grows too small to support CliffyB's Massive head...
I am sure he is a down to earth guy and not the rockstar he pretends to be on his site, relax, unbunch your panties CliffyB fan boi's, shesh!
I've been watching this one for a while, it looks great. EGM had a feature on Gears, in the august issue. I hope it comes to the PC since I won't be buying a ps3 or 360 on launch unless by some miricle they start shipping with strippers.
i wonder how well it'll tansfer between 360 and the PC, assuming there will be a PC version, I think there will be, i mean it is a shooter by epic... should be on the PC. Oh well, my only complaint with console/PC shooters is that they seem to feel slightly... wonky and chuggy when moving around, not smooth and precise like with straight up PC shooters, might have something to do with porting the controls over from the console version. but I'm no coder, so I wouldn't really know, all i care about is good games and this looks like one of them.
I think that it might be 360 exclusive because they are also making Unreal 2007 at the same time for the PC so I would imagine they don't want to have products competing with each other ? Maybe down the line they will have someone do a PC port. I hope so anyways !
I think Epic learned their lesson in regards to console/pc ports with Unreal Awakening. That fact is evidenced in the Liandri Conflict being an console exclusive. Ports tend to lack the visiral experience of the original.
This line caught my eye as Ive been anticapating it for the next gen shooters; "As a result of dwelling in perpetual darkness, they have an aversion to light... one of our few advantages." Light will not just be an effect but an element of gameplay like in Splinter Cell only in a FPS tempo. Light guns, flash grenades, and helicopter spot lights abound.
If it's a 360 exclusive that's fine, as I'll be getting that console anyways. It's a damn impressive engine, and I'm trying to convince our own studio to pick it up. It's quite spendy, but certainly worth it.
Ehhh I don't see why volumetric rendering would have to be a faked effect in that shot. I remember seeing the Sony Pre e3 press confrence and they had that real-time on these creatures with Big Hands it was pretty damn cool ...
very cool! I heard that the story is being penned by Eric Nylund, one of my favorite authors, he wrote the 2 Halo books that take place before and after the original Halo, his original works are great also, I highly recommend Signal to Noise.
Daz, it is definitly. Its a very tricky shader effect. You can see the SSS on the UT2006/7 shots too (The ears of melcom for example)
However, gears of war looks awesome, really like the style. Though I cant stand this lately more and more upcoming blooming overkill....and purple blooming argh!
I think by 'faked' Daz meant that they shader was not doing the types of calculations that an off-line renderer does, but instead something cheaper that yields a similar effect to SSS.
I think they're calling them 'transmission masks,' and the shader was primarily a translucency effect (self illuminate if nearby pixels in 3d space are being illuminated, using the mask and it's colors as a factor). Or something like that. . .
Holy crap that looks cool!
If it will really be an x360 exlusive then that would push me over the edge of buying that conbsole right away. I usually wait until the first or second price cut but with goodies like this I wouldn't be able to wait.
Looks pretty damn awesome, I love games with large open environments like half-life 2 and this is looking something like that. I don't get what all the fuss about Cliffy B is, I met him at Unreal University and talked with him, great fucking guy in my opinion.
Ehh probebly only people like ROR who work with him know his true personality. I seen him hosting the G4 awards and he seemed like a tool but im sure that was an act and was probebly feeling like a rockstar at the moment.
While I can't claim to be very close to Cliff, I know theres a big difference between Cliff and 'Cliffy B'.
I sure couldn't handle getting up under the spotlight as much as he has to and the only way to be good at something is to enjoy it so go figure.

I really hope we do get it for the PC.
