July 2nd 2:03pm, A neighbor of mine was just picked up in an ambulance after lighting a homemade tennis ball bomb with a sparkler. It blew off his thumb and index finger and I have no doubt the others are severely messed up. This all happened to on his right hand. While I feel really bad for him and I hope he can recover and they save whatever is left of his right hand. I can't have too much sympathy for someone being so stupid. He is not known for being the smartest guy on the block either. Another neighbor wanted to start a betting pool to see when and if he blows off the other hand before the 4th, as cold as that was, I couldn't help but laugh inside while I told him he was a sick SOB.

do you know a survey taken shows that 50 people a year die from tennis ball related explosions
But yes, people are morons on the 4th of July. I think it's the heat, myself. People are coming out of winter hibernation and go completely nutty when the summer heat comes out.
Personally, I'd like it to be a cool 55° all year
doctor in the casualty ward, examining some knackers bloody stump of a hand :
"What happened to you, sir"
"firework blew up"
"why were you holding it?"
"i stuck it in the ground and lit it but it didn't go off, so i went back to relight it"
"get out, sir"
just held them in their hands and pointed them at each other.. crazy.
Dunno, there isn't a huge wave of injuries on new year's eve here, there are more than usual and more fires but no big stories (though perhaps they just stopped bothering with reporting those).
And hey, fireworks day always makes you realize where the term "fog of war" comes from.
Aren't there always people watching, though?

As far as I know they stopped reporting those, but there is a statistic every year that shows that there are several deaths(!) every new year's eve here in Germany due to fireworks miss-use (and alcohole missuse the same time probably).
