The only way I can think of is, you'd have to use a script or plugin to export to a common format (is there a .3DS export script for Gmax? Have a google...).
There's no way to directly convert a .gmax file to a .max file, so you'll just have to see what your importing options are for Max6, and go and find out if you can export any of those file formats from Gmax using extra scripts and plugins.
Gmax exports to nothing that hasn't been paid for in a 'game pack'. So that means you're limited to MD3 and whatever else is available out there, like Roller Coaster Tycoon, or something.
A generous soul and fantastic human being named Chris Cookson actually fixed the PopNFresh MD3 exporter that comes with the Tempest game pack, and he also wrote a MAXScript that imports MD3's into MAX. He has since gotten out of that gig, however, and so his work was almost lost (he doesn't have a web page now). But here is where to find his stuff:
