I already know both of those pretty well, but mainly for doing VERY High res models for the aerospace industry...I'm looking to change gears and get into the gaming industry as I'm burnt out on nothing but airplanes
I know photoshop and MAX pretty well. What game engine do you suggest I start messing with and experiementing with. I basically want to build up a demo portfolio to land a job somewhere.
Unreal Tournament 2k4 is a great place to get started for game stuff. It's well supported in the community, and the game itself ships with the entire editing software, which incorporates model compiler, level editor and shader editor.
If you get the ActorX plugin for 3dsmax (free, try looking at http://udn.epicgames.com ), then you can export level geometry and player models for compiling into the game.
There are plenty of tutorials lying around for UT2k3 and 2k4, try www.3dbuzz.com for video tutorials (what they call VTM's), or www.beyondunreal.com for related forums.
I started out way back in the day with Milkshape3D. I wouldn't recommend it, as it was building models triangle by triangle, which is different than the flow made with the tools in Max and Maya.
As for an engine, check out Ogre3D and Irrilicht. They are fairly new and free, utilizing a lot of the new technologies (Irrilicht has per-pixel lighting).
