Learn To Float – Game Workforce Education Conference at LWTC 6/9/05

Swimming successfully in the active and ever-rising waters of the regional game industry requires first-hand insight into the shape and depth of the pool. Attendees on Thursday June 9 at Lake Washington Technical College, Kirkland, will receive this virtually impossible to obtain knowledge from insiders willing to educate aspiring professionals.

Register online for $9, includes box lunch and textbook, by 6/6 ($18 after 6/7 or at the door): www.lwtc.ctc.edu/btc. Location: West Building, third and fourth floors. Directions: www.lwtc.ctc.edu/aboutmaps/driving.

Aligning the needs of industry with the increasing number of students eager to enter the field is the purpose of the multi-year Game Industry SKILLS Panel project. LWTC has been the recipient of grant funds from the WA State Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board to advance and strengthen the links between industry and education.

Learn To Float is structured to optimize results for all and leading companies are participating, specifically Nintendo, Microsoft, Amaze, Atari-Humongous, Valve and others. In one day, attendees receive in-depth context, benefit from an interactive panel featuring hiring managers, and have an opportunity for 1-on-1 input from those managers.

It begins with a 9:30 a.m. keynote by Claude Comair, Chair of both Nintendo Software Technology and DigiPen Institute of Technology, the premier four-year school whose graduates are in huge demand. He’ll provide an overview of industry trends and ‘the worker of the future.’

Two sequences of breakout sessions follow. Current hands-on professionals from both technical and art career paths, representing Microsoft Games, Amaze, Cranky Pants, Humongous and others will also field questions. In addition, the rapidly emerging interactive media realm of ‘serious games,’ mobile and casual gaming will be showcased.

The lunch panel of hiring managers and human resource executives will discuss precisely what each looks for in competitive entry-level applicants and answer questions; followed by informal 1-on-1 meetings with attendees. Microsoft Games-ACES (Flight Simulator), Art Director, Rick Welsh; Susan de Merit, top HR executive for Amaze Entertainment’s five subsidiaries, uniquely producing titles across the continuum from mobile to console and PC games; plus Suzanne Gordon, HR manager for Atari-Humongous, a hugely successful company with decades experience in award-winning games for children, like the “Backyard Sports” series, are among the panelists.
