gah, having a hard time putting my feelings into words!
I'm a 3d modeler who wants to join a team, a team that at least attempts to be PROFESIONAL! You know, a team that has goals and deadlines and actually communicates. When I get an assignment I would really appreciate some concept art and a description of the character.
I don't mean to come off as a jerk but it's very frustrating. I know it's hard to get a good team together and keep everything running smoothly, I tried and couldn't do it, I don't have the leadership skills. But I do know that I do my best work when I'm part of a motivated team. You can see some of my art at
artbyjustin.com. I'm looking for a good solid project that won't fall apart around me, PM me if interested.

The team usually consists of me being the leader, coder, modeler, skinner AND animator along with a couple other concept artists and modelers :P

The sites aren't much and for StoneFang the moddb profile is more elaborate

but then again there is very few of the later. ive been trying for ages to find a mod that would not only appeal to me and have some orginal ideas but also has a team of people that has the skills and time management to pull it off.
Im in the same boat as you,I struggle to make my own concept art,not nessarily inital sketches and Ideas,I can do that but orthographic drawings and final charcter designs I struggle with and need someone else to doit...I also normally have probs getting my stuff ingame so need someone to do that/or spend time helping me do that.....unfortunatily I havent come across a mod team yet that can provide me with the "slot" that I need to fit in.
Good luck in your search though
John
I was asked by these guys to do character modeling, but I'm tied up with another mod I'm working on. No clue where he got my name from, but drop em a line. From what I've seen it looks like it'd be fun to work with.

A good leader can get the mod off the ground all by himself. You don't need a team of twenty people to make a gameplay prototype. Once you have the prototype ready you are already one of the top 10%. You can get work done and if nobody wants to help you you can do it yourself. This means you have the technical skill to pull off the mod. You also know what you want and how to archieve it. Therefore you are already half a leader. Such a leader knows what his teammates need to do and can probably give them a pretty complete list of things to do and in what order to do them (sometimes with deadlines). Most mods lack such a leader, they are led by an "ideasman" who knows shit all about game development and just had some idea one day and now wants to make a mod. Usually those ideas are very thin with little thought put into the details and more importantly within the next two months he will have three other ideas and wants to turn all of them into different mods.

I agree, what I was saying is that its easy to find out whether or not you have a good project lead on your hands - a little bit a research, some back and forth, and you should know enough about the person and where they plan to take the mod to know whether its worth joining for the long haul.
But youre probably right - if someone isnt willing to put the work into the there mod to get it off the ground, by whatever means necessary, then it probably speaks volumes of their commitment to it.
Merlin I can understand what you are saying totally and the process of stealing the thunder of other guys and its a lagitimate argument.
But the bottomline remains,People like youself,KDR and several other polycounters that are leading mods are few and far between in the wider modding world. Also soemtime its not that easy to determine a good mod unless they have soemthing done, even if its just afew models its still something to show me there skills and give me an oppotunity to see if im on par with them ( and answer questions like "would my work stand out if it was put up next to the theres in eitehr a good or bad way?") Also the other thing that trully gets on my tits is modders who insist on working on multiple mods as it slows the processes right down, the leader has no control over that and is soemthing that I seem to come across again and again.
Also I am not against joinning mods in the early stages, infact I think of myself as being possibly part of soemthing when I do,but when you have spent ages (a year or so) on project and nothing is coming together I begin to wonder and Ive been with 2 mods like this, which I have got other plus's out of.
For example
Years ago I worked On max Payne1 Mod,We had the mod done, only problem was becuase the max payne community had dissolved there was a lack of mappers and we had to scrap our mod becuase we had 1 mapper and about 5 of 15 levels done...but the thing I got out of it was I was lucky enough to work with Mr Rockstar (then ratpoizon)...i modelled while he textured my models and we got on great and still do. but he went on to learn modelling aswell (crediting me as an influence to why he started modelling) and now look at him, workign at Ritural on a kick arse project and all credit to him.
meanwhile in the same time I joined another mod, still early in production,1.5 years down the line it turns out im the only one doing anything...so i leave....got alot of expsereince from it though.
Ya know if I tried I proberly could join a good mod, thats still early in production so i get my good ol "I feel part of soemthing feeling, which in turn motivates me"...but I think due to my bad exsperiences where my plus's have not made up for the bad expserience of having nothign to show.
Im just not so up for putting myself out for a 3rd time to a mod in the very early stages or pre production (as it was for that Max payne mod).
anyway must eat...
John
But now that Ive thought better of it, you guys obviously have valid points.
Anyway, a friend got in touch about modeling her concepts so we might put a portfolio together to send to some studios and if that doesn't work I did get some good leads in this thread.
The leader has paid artist to do work, so I would say he is pretty serious. Good luck.

When looking for a MOD to join I would try to pick one that is based on a game which has a large fan-base and that is still played. I worked on a JK2/JA MOD for a whole which died pretty much because the game itself is dead. Maybe an open door though
Also some MODs just have plans and ideas that aren't realistic. Even a couple of levels, some characters and weapons and a new basic menu is a ton of work which most MODs will never even finish.
So if you find a MOD which has work done already, use a popular game and have a realistic/small idea then the changes are bigger that it might get released. Still, it's a lucky shot.
What you could also do is email the project managers of MODs with concepts that you like and say that you want to contribute 1 or 2 things. That way you get concepts handed to you to make and you don't have the commitment thing. If you really like where the MOD is gong you can always join them.

I've had 2 nubs telling me to join CnC Reborn once.
Denied.
If you'd be interested in helping beef up a currently done game that would be good. Your work would be sent out in patches after the game is released (that is, if the game is out before any work is done)
The only thing delaying it right now is some netcode problems.
The team is very organized, very talented, and always looking for help.
***i am just kidding, omg seriously...lol***
