this is an enviromental prop for a police training program im working on. ive been focusing on enviromental models and scene and particularly on textures and uvw mapping
looks pretty good to me! Since it looks like you are going for a low poly approch I would take out the handle and just paint it on the lid in the laying down position. Or if you feel like it really needs to be there make it out of an single plane with an alpha chanel. Those polys in the handle could be used to make the bag have a lip over the can, or put some wrinkles in the bag? But it depends what scene limit is and how much detail everything else is going to have.
Texture wise it looks great, and I would say you did a really good job.
needs more dings! i dunno if i've ever encountered one of those old-fashioned metal trashcans that hasn't seem its fair share of abuse. i don't think they even make them anymore, i think there are a finite number of those metal trashcans placed on earth at the beginning of time, and when all of them have been destroyed, so will the earth. WHICH COULD IN FACT MAKE IT A TRASHCAN OF DOOM! if it's the last one
but seriously, i think it needs a little more roughing up. other than that, i likey.
i think one of the big things holding me back is an imcomplete mastery of photoshop, adding 3d qualities to a 2d texture ive found to be particularly hard.
that and consistancy in the overall life of a texture start to finish.
J0420: reference! if you're copying a real world item like this trashcan, verisimilitude is a big deal. digital cameras (and the internet) are your friend!
its not the trashcan,i wish i had time to fix it but being only artist on project i must move on, the texture is about 50% done, still have errors to fix like some of the rivet line ups, gotta dirty it up and maybe ill soften lines
The trucks cab needs to be wider. If you look at the mirrors, the driver wouldn't even be able to see anything beside the vehicle. The nose/hood may also be too long.

thanx you brought up a good point, ill widen it when i weld all the pieces together after the texturing is
done
Try and work on your lighting a bit more. The way you have rendered what I assume is a glossy paint job is not representing such. Try and make the highlights tighter and less soft. Everything looks sorta like felt or velvety maybe. I donno. Photo referencing is key when learning to paint new materials.

Still a cool can though.
Maybe make some more folds in the garbage bag that is wrapped around the top and make them thin and sharp . The thin plastic usually folds like that.
the doom part was to hook you in

Also i think you should try tighten th eplastic bag up a little, it looks more like satin to me right now
some contrast would probably do it
