On another note, they seem to be abusing the HHGTTG brand, I've seen ads for two HHGTTG related cellphone games yesterday... "Vogon Planet Destructor". WTF?
I had a great time. If your going to fit three books into a single film, thats probably the best skim Ive seen in a while.
Fords comic delivery sucked ass compared to the original. I loved that they kept that awesome banjo tune too. prunk0pa-pa-pa-padda-dum-dum. prunk-pa,da,da da
Did anyone else notice the original marvin in the vogon que?
btw, what does "abusing the HHGTTG brand" mean? I don't see the reason for complaining about a couple of new games for a "brand" that already officially encompasses radio series, TV series, novels, LPs, stage show, text adventure, movie etc etc
I am still looking forward to seeing it anyway, its so unusual to find a film that is lighthearted nowdays and not about the the downfall of the world or some such depressing subject.
This is likely to be a movie best enjoyed by people who have never read the books, or listened to the original radio play series (which is the best way to experience HHGTTG in my opinion).
The actor who played Ford Prefect did not convey the character. And it was the voice.
Also MIA ... all the cool asides from the Guide itself. After the initial mention or two, the Guide sort of disappears from the story.
besides the ocasionaly little clip i found it verry dull, conveyed with no sense of wonder or awe. mos def was a horrible ford, and for all purposes once he got arthur off theplanet, he culd have been stripped from the movie without making a bit of difference.
it was alright, not bad, not particularly good - about as funny as the first book was when you've already read it once : ie, mildly amusing.
agreed with mojo2k - Ford was a total non-entity, he didn't even seem in the mood to get drunk and dance with girls ...
hated the orginal-tv-marvin bit that K/o/Daveness mentions -so telegraphed, so clumsy ...
however, the whole thing was 100 times more enjoyable than the recent radio series of "Life, the Universe and Everything" which is quite possibly the most smug thing i've heard in years.
i really liked it though i haven't read the books yet. one of the biggest laughs in the theatre i saw it in didn't really come from the movie though. at the end when Trillian and Arthur kiss some little boy in the audience said "Ewwww!" quite loudly and the whole theatre laughed
I agree Ford wasn't up to snuff but overall I found it very enjoyable - especially the whale. I thought they might pull that punch and I suppose they did to a certain extent since you didn't get to see the whale gobbets splashing. Sam Rockwell made a fantastic Zaphod.
Tpe mentioned that the film isn't about the destruction of our world, but isn't it the main plot in the film, like it is in the book? Without ruining any elements of surprise for those who haven't seen it yet (I hope). Btw, I haven't seen it myself yet, but look forward to watch it.
I thought it was pretty cool, kinda. But, I don't know, something about it seemed so "done before" But, it was funny. I liked the way the blonde surfer lookin king guy's head would flip up and his alter ego would pop out. AWESOME special effects

I shall make sure that you are left behind when the planet is destroyed.

As for the tertiary phase radio show...I pretty much enjoyed that; d/l-ed 'em and listened to them on my way to uni. Great way to start a morning
