hawken my dear boy i think you forget your man! this is my portfolio we're talking about, you think i'd be productive enough to fill 'pages of images' ? only ten images per page.
and i stand by my comment that ordering your thumbnailed images to put your best work first to make the best first impression means cock-all if the person viewing your site decides that they'd rather just look at a different one on a whim. when presenting my portfolio, i like the idea of being more in control of what the viewer's seeing. sure, they get to decide what section they're in (mechanical design, characters, etc.), but they don't get to randomly decide the order.
