It's a form of consolation. Giving him a medal or having a parade won't make much of a difference now that he's dead, but hey, at least it'll make us feel better.
respect to him furfilling his duty and "saving" his soldiers. But the war did go on, the chance that people from that unit are/where/going to be killed in action is present and he is still dead, just like the 50 guys he killed. well, probably they where single
Living heroes, especially military ones, are few and far between, and they probably suffer from PTSD. Not to diminish Sgt. Smith's sacrifice, but it's easier for people to remember you as a hero when you're dead. By that logic, the 50 guys he killed are all heroes, too. Not medal-worthy, perhaps, but heroes in someone's eyes.
Mr. Toast, read the bottom of that article and you'll see it's not the first CMH since Vietnam, it's the third. Two were given for guys who gave theirs in Mogadishu.
If a civilian killed 50 people, even in defense of his own family, wouldn't we consider him a psychopath? Can you imagine having a conversation with a man capable of killing 50 people single-handedly, under any circumstance? That'd be an intense, harrowing fucking experience, I think. Good thing he became a soldier and not a cop, or teacher, or my neighbor.
