AstroZombie polycounter lvl 18
One of my co-workers just bought HL2 over the weekend and is having problems getting it to run. I have no idea what the problem is so I thought that I would post it here in case anyone else has had a similiar isssue:

I can load the game up, no problem. I get to the menu screen, thngs are still cool. Then I click create new game. Still no problem. I see the loading screen for the new game, then right after the loading completes my screens say "off mode in 5 sec". Once they power off, my computer is frozen and I need to restart manualy. I thought maybe I was trying to run it at an improper screen size, but I tried mulitple resolutons with no luck! Is it a screen refresh rate thing?

I am really confused because everything seems fine until I make a new game. Please help!?

the first thing that would come to my mind would be a power problem, but that's without putting a whole hell of a lot of thought into it. Has he had problems with anything else, specifically 3D applications or games?

I gotta agree with bearkub. What PSU is he using?

Nope, no other problems. Pretty strange since his hardware is identicle to mine only he has double the RAM and a slightly faster processor. I'm thinking it may be a software problem; antivirus or one of the other start up programs ...

    edit:
PSU = 380 Watt True Power

In the device manager you've got some Power Management options for your hardware, one of which is 'Allow Windows to turn off the device to save power' or something like that. Perhaps a piece of hardware has that checked and is causing problems?

Could be video...Check the AGP voltage of the PSU in the BIOS and make sure the AGP voltage is not dipping below 12.5volts. My old powersupply that was a 480w went bad and couldnt supply the needed 12.5V to my GeForce6800 and thus caused a similar issue.

Once I replaced that PSU, I had no problems ever again.

Also if he has ALOT of hardware drawing power...(lots of IDE drives, PCI cards...fancy case fans & lights ...ect) I'd recommend a new, higher PSU anyway.

his computer is possessed. I reccomend a full reformat. Then he can try installing it again. Try to get him to find a priest as well that has a degree in computer science.
