that's surprising to hear about the dead pixels issues. i've got an apple cinema display, which have a shitload of pixels and so a couple of dead ones to be expected but hardly noticeable. a PSP on the other hand is a much much smaller LCD, you'd think they'd be able to clamp down on quality control for that.
i'm going to echo the sentiments about getting a second gen PSP. once the big titles are out (GTA, etc) for the system and they iron out some kinks and QC issues then it'll be a lot more attractive. the guy at the local EB had an import that he let me play with very briefly a month back or so... it was impressive, but i was struck by how fragile and expensivey-electronic the unit felt. not necessarily a bad thing, but it gave me pause. second generation it will likely be for me
Yeah, that's a good point gauss. I think a 2 year extended warranty is a must on any Sony system though. I figure I'll take mine in regardless in a year and a half and get a newer unit then.
the system rocks, with it i got MGS ACID, Twisted Metal and Ridge Racer, MGS Acid is taking up ALL my time, great game! twisted metal is basically twisted metal 2 re-visited. and ridge racer looks amazing for a hand held racer, cant wait for gt4 mobile! dual raced witha friend the other day worked flawlessly, i traded in my ds to get it and i'm not at all, i enjoyed the Ds but there was little software for it and everything i wanted to play was pushed back till october , glad i got the psp though!
yeah there's a bunch of places around here in Dallas that has free wireless hotspots, i may check one out this week and see how well it works, i'd like to get a group together that plays once in awhile, i tried the wireless lan racing on ridge racer, works great.
Something funny about Sony - I thought it'd be better to post in here, it's probably not worth a new topic on it's own... Sony are pretty dumb, it seems.
Well, i got to play Ape Escape yesterday on the PSP. I love that damn thing. The screen is lovely as is the overall design. My only gripe with it was the analog "stick." It felt as if i had to fight with it to get it to move. That coupled with the fact that it feels more like a button made for a very frustrating experience for me. I hope the analog loosens up after some play time. I'll be grabbing a PSP as soon as the 2nd rev is released along with some good titles.
How long do you guys expect it will take for them to work everything out? Because thats basically all thats stopping me from buying one, this system has so much potential.
heh.. talked to the classmate with the psp today.. he's up to 20 dead pixels... and is totally paranoid.. thinks he wont be able to get it replaced.. had to calm him down and point out that unless there's something i've missed recently, sony's got his ass covered.
I picked this up for my trip to Europe tomorrow. Should be fun. I've always loved Need For Speed series, and I tried it out tonight, loved it.
I had one dead pixel, but the dude at Toys R Us said you can gently press on the screen till you get the colored pattern, and that can sometimes revive a pixel after you reboot.
Lumines owns me, I managed to get up to lvl 92 on Challenge mode, then I started to mess up badly as the blocks where droping too fast for me to rotate.
yay!
picked up my psp!
and from the look of things, no dead pixels!
grabbed lumines, was gonna grab the ATV game as well, but the EB was out of them, might pick it or something else up tomorrow.
I picked up the PSP today cause we're driving up the north end of Cali tomorrow to pick up my sister from college, and I knew I was gonna get bored on that ride.
Neat video thingie that might help fix some Dead Pixels!
What it really does is just flash Red then Green then Blue really fast to not really fix dead pixels, but STUCK PIXELS. got rid of 2 of the 3 deadish ones i had. hope it helps some of you too!
I just got mine last night. I'll report back here as soon as I have formulated any strong opinions either way.
I picked up Untold Legends to go with it. The lack of included titles and hefty price were a bit of a dissappointment though.
Only seem to be playing lumines lately. I've finshed CPU mode twice and gotten to lvl 152 in challange mode. (darkstalkers and Ridge racer are in the back burner for now)
so i think the PSP has me excited about gaming again.. i've got something with some power in my hands, rather than the meak lil gameboy.
not to mention all the media capabilities...
something out of curiousity...
part of the money i used to get my psp with came from selling my Viewsonic Pocket PC... i'd originally bought that thing to show off my modelling stuff on the go, and now intend to use the psp for that instead (screen's better, and the thing's a lot more powerful... plus better games ).
While PSP Video9 has been extremely useful for final compression and getting movies onto the psp, I've found that using Windows Movie Maker has been a godsend (both for this and sharing stuff online). It took a ~5 mb rotation render and compressed it down to ~747kb using its "default" compression settings.
The final result still looks very nice, and now i've got a good-looking rotation render of my Magnum model on my PSP.
Though I'd share that useful tip with you guys.
Also, what kind of things are you guys carrying around on your memory cards with you?
I just a bunch of refrence pic's when I'm at work doing some sketches. 32mb is too puny for mp3's and vid's of course :P
Now if they included a day planer or memo pad (maybe when the keyboard peripheral is out?) I can finally get rid of my year old Sony Clie. (wow that got outdated fast...)
Update: I already had to replace mine as it started crashing when loading my 1 and only game. I took it to the store and my mem stick & game worked fine in other PSP's, but mine wouldnt load anything.
Awesome QA SONY....
I have my demo reel and a few animation samples installed onto a memory chip. Since Ive done this Ive had more feedback as well created more connections with in a few weeks than Id ever had in the years before.
Just think of it, you go to GDC and you make a contact and they tell you go give them your demo. Hay dude how about checking it out NOW
