yeah, its weird for me... for some things (like the hulk and I robot), a bad reference to the originals will completely ruin it for me... but for certain things, I can forget about it and just enjoy the movie their style
Only loosely related. The movie was meant to be stand-alone at first but someone found the need to stamp a franchise name on it. Kinda like Starfox Adventures.
Gotta admit one thing, it's not a generally faithful idea to take a story that's been around a while, do a new version, and while doing so, drop out key elements that people have come to associate with it. Like Starship Troopers's long-range jumping hardsuits. And the War of the Worlds tripods. And uh, certain bases on Phobos...
So, in this one, Earth gets invaded by invisible forces? Whatever.
Teasers generally show nothing of the plot or characters, because they're made long before production ends. The plotline of the film is "As Earth is invaded by alien tripod fighting machines, one family fights for survival.". Seeing as this film is still in post-production, the shots involving the machines are most likely getting the finishing touches. The "lightning" could be an updated effect for the alien's weapon. An improvement from the old fashion laser beams.
I'll wait for the trailer while the rest of you get your hopes up. I remember "The Incredibles" trailer having some fat guy trying to fit into a super suit while asking for a salad.
If you frame by frame through the trailer there is one shot where it looks like a boat or barge is getting flipped over and it looks like some sort of large machine is doing the flipping, it's like 1 or 2 frames so it's hard to tell for sure.
I looks like the lightning is something landing - after lightning strikes a few times in one spot there's something moving under the ground there. It just seems to me they're doing a new take on the arrival of the aliens. I'm looking forward to see this.

Quite enjoyed that movie and the trailer for WotW looks tasty to me.

From SS's track record, I anticipate that it will be pretty good.
