Yeah I've been pretty impressed by what I've seen on the commercials and on their site. The CG actually looks really good, and not just crappy, made-for-TV, Discovery Channel stuff (although I understand the people that do the effects for those DC shows are under serious time restrictions to churn those effect out)

Another Animal Planet program I can't wait to see, but will probably be in development for a little while longer is "Alien Planet" Its a movie/Animal Planet special based on Wayne Douglas Barlowe's book "Expedition" Some of you may be more familiar with his work through his book on hell "Inferno." Anyway, the guy is an enourmously talented artist...he published his first book "Barlowes Guide to Extra Terrestrials" when he was like 21.

hehe, I was just telling Ror an hour and a half ago how I wished the team that did Walking With Dinosaurs and Walking With Beasts would do more big-scary-animal animation. This is the biggest and scariest I can think of.

I was a little unimpressed, as I didn't like the dragon designs all that much, but the animation seemed okay.

Assuming I understand what you're not impressed by ('cause that was my initial reaction as well), I've decided I like that they're using tried-and-true, somewhat bland dragon designs. I think most of us Western-thinkers can agree on what a dragon looks like, down to a fine level of detail, though none of us has actually seen one. This common idea is what they seem to be going for, for the sake of viewers believing their dragons are about as realistic as they can possibly get. "I'll buy that that's a dragon." My take on it, innyway.

I watched it tonight, was pretty cool. Some of the sound effect sounded very familiar. Especially some of the screeches from the dragon near the end of the show, I'm sure I heard that in some game, like when you clicked on them they would screech like that, but I can't remember where it's from.

Lol. What aspect of the CG would you direct Framestore to improve exactly? The lighting was matched to scene perfectly, the modeling and surfacing top notch, and the animation pretty darn convincing. The Dragon designs are pretty subjective of course, but overall impressive stuff.

I saw bits of it. It was pretty neat.

I think the prehistoric ( http://animal.discovery.com/convergence/dragons/profiles/prehistoric.html ) dragon looked the most convincing in terms of design.

Right, it looked more like a flying horse. Good show over all but I couldn't sit thru and more of Jean-Luc's voice droning on and on. I turned if off after about an hour. Sorry.

cool show indeed. I like how they tied it in to real world history as much as possible (the dragon and the tiger from china, the knights and dragon hunters).. the 'examination' of the 'found' dragon body was a little cheesy (come on.. green lasers for 'xrays'), but overall they kept the show as realistic as you could while trying to discuss dragons in world history.

Yeah they did. it was the one that was after the water dragon. It fought the tiger. They had it leap across a ravine.

my problem with the graphics was it looked like 3d models, and not like real dragons.... They looked too flat....
