Hey guys, just a regular model update as always
Ive went through soooo many versions and prototypes of this model, but i think im finally done with it. No idea what im going to name him yet, so for now, hes just simply addressed as, "Soldier"...
He weighs in at 4488 pollies, and was designed for a Republic Commando squad style game for Half Life 2. It was going to be within the Halo universe (hence his haloesque'ness). but for the time being, i cant get a big enough group going to get the mod off the ground. If anyone is interested, feel free to hit me up. AIM- ZeroX363, E-MAIL=

The trooper is very cool dude, me likes. The only issues I see are some spots are very wasteful on the polies (those little boxes along the chest straps are so small they could easily be done with a single cube, or even perhaps a plane with a transparency map).
I think his arms are too short
RageUnleashed: Hah, nice joke :P. Well the only reason i put them there and let them be detailed like that, is the fact that Half Life 2 likes detail, and i had the room to do so since i dont have a face model. The other four versions dont have those straps also btw. However you do have a point of them being a waste, and ill try and figure something out. I might just end up doing a box like you said. thankx
Daz: Thankx man. that is the single most ANNOYING area of the whole damn thing. They were longer, but the proportions, i thought, were too long (finger tips went past half-way of thight) so i shortened them. I always wondered if the arms were too short, now i know. If you wouldnt mind doing a paintover for me, i would apprecaite it (nothing detailed, just a line forming the upper arm, elbow join, wrist, and to the end of the hand) that would be great.
thankx guys. I tried to keep the style a bit while still being creative. appreciate the comments so far, they really help
Unless you mean the sloth avatar, which is way more accurate as a self-portrait than anything else could be
I wouldn't go quite as long in the arms as this guy. His arms are a little long, but a compromise between your original model and the photo would work I think.
looking pretty good there Darth,if your happy with complications those extra parts on the strap make when UVing and texturing then id say stick with them,as long as you have the polygons leaved over why not do more detail hey? and it is upper body detail, not somewhere thats less likely to be seen, like his foot for example.
Fix up the arms and you have a good little model there.
Cheers
john
The only thing i can say is that I feel like the helmet/head is not really that cool looking, and rather forgettable. Its like really generic and doesnt really catch my attention. I mean if that was your intention thats cool, but if you plan on making him like a main character, maybe try some variant designs. I was reading the Art of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones on the toilet (a great book I recommend it) and you can see the many helmet variations for the clone troopers that Doug Chiang went through before lucas settled on the fin-head design. Each helmet he designed evoked a different feeling, some being weak, some scary, some simply damn cool looking. I could scan in the page to show you, but I dont want to be sued or nuttin, lemme know.
Ill get some time tonight to work on the arms hopefully. So an update should come soon
Yea, i REALLY want to see those designs, but i guess that wouldnt be right. Thankx for all your compliments though, i appreciate it. I have had a very hard time working with him and trying to make him original and stand out, and the head is probably the hardest thing ive dealth with. I'll start trying to do some sketches and see what i can come up with though, thankx. As for the style of the soldier, its kind of confussing. The basis of the storyline is(as said, this is WITHIN the halo universe), a new super soldier project was started, that was less expensive, and more soldiers could be made to replace entire platoons. This soldier i have posted is the leader of a 4 man squad (5 total)...they are all suppose to have individual looks, but the soldier model is generic. However, i did want them to have awesome heads, so ill still work on it
As i said above, I planned for this to be part of a Squad Based mod for HL2. If anyone is interested, i could really use some help. I really need to get my name out there and get my work around.

I have to agree that the head is maybe not so noticeable, but I think if you do a good texture it will really make him shine. I like the color scheme you have for him, though.
Alright i was working in class today, and without looking at any ref picture i came up with this, tell me what you think...is this enough "pizaz" for you?

I still have to add some detail and finish the head off. Wondering if i should actually make the slope of the helmet as in my sketch, or keep the old one, take a look

thankx n00bstories...you ROCK
Ok, not much of an update...i know this is looking real repetitive, sorry for that, but heres an update on the helmet, edited the shoulder pads, and remade the knee pads

Not sure what the two yellow things are...probly some kind of important extension on the vision modes or something, not sure yet.
However, the gray indentions on the side of the glass are going to be used in a thermal vision mode (The design based off a Viper, dur ) and be used as a pit
The big box on the right side of the helmet is just a computer area for input and storage, also powers the helmet..and the thing on the right is obviously a light
The thing in the middle at the top that sticks out (blue) is going to be a logo area, im going to make it grey next time
Is it just me? or does it look like he has no neck?...hmmm
BTW, now that i have bought, played, and beat Republic Commando, i am even more inspired to make this mod
If anyone is looking for a project to do that will definately be worth the time, feel free to ask me about it

Each version will have different packs and add-ons, as well as different shoulder pads
good luck with it ^^
UVWmapping is started, but i need an opinion

thankx n00bstories!
Heres a skin im temporarily working on. I know its not much, but im still learning. If someone can help do some paintovers or give me some tips on how i should actually go about designing this that would be great (i know you dont know what i want, but u still might be able to give me pointers on what you see)

heres the flat

i think just keep going like u started on the noseplate (if thats a word lol). keep adding in the shadows and the highlights for the rest of the helmet.. I would turn down the opacity of the metallic overlay just a bit tho. atm it seems a bit too much. maybe add a noise filter at small %:age to compensate.
keep it up, nice start
just a simple update...does it seem too..."plated"? or do you guys like the look? I cant really tell at the moment. Unfortunately i have to work tomorrow, but maybe i can get some stuff done after or before, looking forward (and hoping) to see other works

I realized my blue hue light was on in the render, so i took that off, no wonder it came out pinkish purple lol
The "vents" on the sides of his helmet arent suppose to be vents...they are suppose to be external thermal displays so you can change vision mode to Thermal, like a Viper. Still gotta work on the looks of that, looks like the vent on the nose, *sigh*

BTW---I see the fault with the tubes on the side of his helmet and the way the mesh flows, i see that distortion, im going to fix it
The upper torso is completely uvwmapped, and the rest should be done by Saturday...sorry...just been enjoying my spring break
as for my skin, nothing else has been done to it really, been concentrating on getting the uvw's done for you guys...sorry for the delay
what is futuristic about this?
it looks like the first unreal tourament characters,
and that was a few years back and has been redone a zillion times so far. futuristic prevokes a feeling of mystery, sometthing of new materials, new designs, based on old ones probably - but deffinately more fresh than what you are presenting so far
think about it,
or simply change the title to "another typical squad soldier"
the model itself isnt bad at all, its nice on its own. u could push the "futuristic" aspect of it a lot further though through the skin, if you'd rather not change the model
I appreciate your critique on it, maybe a bit harsh, but welcomed
The mod takes place during and after Halo 2, and seeing as when i made this thread that i didn't have a name for him, i just came up with futuristic squad soldier...can you get me a picture of the unreal soldier your talking about? because i never played that
actually, turns out to be the modeller's webpage
http://home.wnm.net/~bgriff/characterUT04-1.html
i didnt mean to sound offensively harsh, just blunt.
i was actually going to use bungie's halo marine as an example of yet-another-space-marine made with a relatively fresh look through the use of their technology. the chromish armor and the very solid art style make it work pretty good. from what uve been doing so far, scraped metal and all, its pretty old from 4 years ago unreal style.
so like i said, no need to change the model but you might want to reconsider what kind of materials he will have.
if you say he comes from the world of halo (and i havent played the game) then build from there. do they have some form of unique energy the marines utilize there? maybe the entire armor is a bio-mechanical half living material that runs on that energy. it can heal itself. you can see the energy "power points" here and there on his body, and energy "veins" connecting the armor parts.
or something like that
I can kinda see how you think it looks like him...but its more of a take off Master Chief (Actually, i edited my Master Chief model to make him O_O)
Oh so your mainly referring to the texture then? The texture is crap, i know, because its only like my...hmm...4'th skin?...im just doing it to get more experience and learn stuff from it...if i ever get my mod going, hes definately going to have a better skin, dont worry. I also dont know how to use any sort of shaders, or even have transparency for that matter...pathetic..i know
If you can give me any ideas for the texture, feel free...i would greatly appreciate it
