How do I change the viewport rotation method in max? In example to rotate locally around a vertice?

I thought I knew how to do this at one point, but it has since escaped me.

Well, you could just select the verts, hit Z and start rotating.

You need to change the Arc Rotate option. It's the button in the lower right corner of the screen, looks like a circle with three arrows coming out of it. The default setting is to rotate around objects, but it's much more useful to set it to rotate around subObject selections, which is what you're after. So click and hold on that button, and three choices will pop up. Select the bottom most option, and your tooltip should say Arc Rotate SubObject if you roll over it with the mouse. It's one of the first things I change whenever using a new install of Max.
