Start with default settings, then 1)under Alpha Field, check "Set to 1.0". 2)under Height Source, check Average RGB. 3)under Height Generation, adjust Scale to taste, with greater scale resulting in more extreme angles. 4)click on 3D preview, enlarge the window that pops up, and see if the preview looks like what I want. 5)Modify Scale till it looks good.
when painting things, start on a gray base (50%), and paint it like a bump map.
apply the filter, and check the 'use multiple layers' option... otherwise you have to flatten your image, copy, back up history, and paste.
I try and keep a dup copy of the stuff i paint (bump details) and have a base gray layer, or use an action to create a layer with merged details, then blend the 2 layers in the areas needed.
