So my Apex AD-1500 finally packed up last night after about 4 years of hard labour. Now I can't watch any PAL DVD's. I just bought 'Big Train' when I was in London in Jan and I can't watch it boohoo!
As I understand it Apex modified the AD-1500 so the later models you couldn't region hack. If that's the case anyone got any recommendations? I spose I could get my Xbox chipped but I can't really be arsed.

If your tv is in a different room than your comp that's a pain.
Most Samsung and Finlux DVD players have a hidden factory settings menu in which you can disable the region check. This hidden menu you can access with a code that you can find easily online.
A lot of other brands have this too but I only have experience with these 2.

Seriously do exactly that... there is also a bunch of other cool stuff you can do with a modded xbox (no not warez).
Just be careful with Xbox live, there are modchips that can be turned of, but I heared rumors that recently xbox-life checked for stuff on the harddrive that is only on there if a modchip is present... you should research that first if you are using Xbox-live.
both of them are divx and xvid compatible and can be made codeffree without too much hassle. most noname brands are also easily made codefree, before you buy just google the model you are interested in and you should be able to find out how to easily make them codefree without affecting the warrentee. Watch out for sony and jvc as they are the most unlikly to be made codefree. Oh yeah and make sure they are progressive scan models...

I know you are over there, but look - 20 quid, multiregion, MP3 and VCD

Have a look on gamewinners.com at least or take a peak on google to see if there are some secret menus before you go out and buy a new one.
PS this isn't the first DVD Player i've made multi-region, alot (snikker) of DVD players do it
That might be more use.
/me slaps thnom
Over here practically every DVD player is multi region from the shops - is it not the same over there?

Not the same. The reason for it is that Europe has a couple of different standards within a relatively small geographic area. PAL and SECAM, various regions, etc. The whole continent of North America is NTSC region 1, so there's no market incentive to regularly carry any other type of player - generally, the only people who need anything else are importing movies or are imports themselves (Daz, in this case). Multi-format or multi-region is a specialty situation over here, and thus more expensive.
When it comes to DVD, there is only PAL or NTSC. In a SECAM region you still use PAL DVDS, but the signal can be converted to SECAM on output or by the TV.
and if thats no good then...

i had about 250 dvd's from theuk with me when coming here to the states, no way i was giving them up!
I had to test alot of games on PAL for xbox and omg. I wanted to jump out the window it was so bad. Yeah I was testing on a PAL tv, so dont ask that question. I really am THAT sensitive to refresh rate flicker. I can spot a monitor from 100 feet away and tell you what its refresh HZ is set to.
(all mine at work and home are set to 85hz and thats barely good enough)
