Alpha channels in Max Matte/Shadow Material

Working with Max again for a bit on a pre-rendered cutscene (damn its hard to go back).

We're doing seperate passes for geometry and a big particle dust cloud and are having much trouble with getting alpha maps to work in conjunction with the Matte/Shadow. I've tried all sorts of odd combinations of blend and composite materials along with materials but I can't seem to get Max to alpha out half the object and matte shadow the other half. It either goes transparent white (which looks like it might be a bug), or leaves a visible section of the object with the rest either matte shadowed or alphaed.

Can anyone help me? This is doing my head in...
