there was athing in the mirror newspaper about it, they said it was 3 different dancers doing the moves and it was mocapped into a PC and kelly animated onto the mocap.
it looks really fake in places and you can tell it's CGI, not like the breakdancing transformer citreon which looks real.
Of course it's CGI in that its a 2D flame job, but that is not a 3D body. It's live action. There would be no need for that body to be a 3D model. Computer graphics in advertising is on a time budget. They wouldn't do something in 3D that they could much more easily accomplish in 2D.
If thats a 3D body then that's the most incredible cloth simulation ever achieved. Better then anything Pixar, ILM, WETA or Escape or anyone else has ever accomplished by far. I don't think that's likely for a car ad.
I dunno what you're talking about. My point was simply since when did the Mirror write factually? If the Mirror said it was mocapped, they got their terminoligies wrong, or you misunderstood what they meant.
"Each actor wore exactly the same suits as Gene did in his memorable scene. Using the most impressive make up and CGI techniques Genes face was mapped onto the actors face..."
"It took a crew of 22 men 14 days to put together a set for the advert shoot using meticulous attention to detail, ensuring the advert is as close as possible to the original.
The dancers used in the advert all had to under go 3 hours of prosthetic make - up , padding inside their suits and wear a wig to ensure that they looked as close as possible to the Gene. "

This car will have an impact on the entire world of auto sales that will last for decades. Inspiring millions. It will bring world peace. It'll feed the children of Africa. It'll make your erections longer and harder.
The ideas behind car advertisements make me giggle. Sometimes I giggle so hard I pee a little. Just a drop.
Wow. Thanks for the clues, BoBo. Following the links led me to this: http://www.detoursvideo.com/Elsewhere.htm which has some detailed stuff from Elsewhere about his work, and philosophies about it. Amazingly coherent observations on how to distinguish yourself and stay true to your abilities, whatever your medium.
Hey, if Gene Kelly was 25 right now, he would be busting the moves right up there with Elsewhere. They would have worked together on the commercial to make Fred Astaire break and pop.

They also are playing the broadway musical locally. Too bad I can't afford to go.
They then centered his head without body movements and with only head turns and tilts.
As Daz said, pasted it on a dancer's body, reshot the whole scene on a set. They used masks for when his collar is in front.
I can't remember the exact url but that's basically what they said. Not very informative but it gives you a basic idea how to do it with Inferno.

If someone asked me 'What Hollywood star would you choose to be?", I'd say Gene Kelly.

How is it mocap or rotoscoping? That's not a CG body. It's live action of somebody else dancing with Kellys head pasted on top.

doh. of course the simplest solution would make the most sense.
