Thi is something that's been bothering me for the last 2 years.

My current example of it:
I got bored and decide to model my kitchen sink and started with the faucet. Now there's a handle of the faucet that kinda juts out at a weird angle that doesnt line up at all with the xyz axes. I use maya btw.

I know I could just model the handle from the xyz origin then place it whrere it should be later and attach it to the ful thing . BUT WHY, IF I DONT WANT TO DO THAT. I wanna just extrude the handle out from this oddly angled area and be able to work with it just as easily as if I had started building it from 0,0,0 . Is ther any way to hack mayas manipulators to make it temporarily think that xyz is whatever I want it to be? Or is ther any kind of universal techniqe that gets around this?

If needed I'll try to post a screenshot of what I'm talking about when i get home.
