How do i disable the default lighting?

I've tried to use the environment script used for max 5 called e-light.

Which is the only and best solution. But the rendering time takes very long and i have 8 models or so to make a .avi turn around for.

yes, i am trying to make a web video portfolio &/or 'reel'?.

What i'm doing is making turn arounds of the models i have been making and i want to know how to get the messy shadows out so it looks all nice and professional.

Thanx for any help!
Also if you want to post up a link to your web video portfolio's i would love to view them.

keep counting them poly's!

Using a skylight in conjucntion with radiosity yields good results. Or heck, since you're using Max7, you can always use Mental Ray. You can get some photo-quality renders from that.

Adding any light into a scene turns off the default lighting. But for a professional presentation you don't really need any fancy GI lighting, take a look at Bobo's site. It's mostly just viewport screen grabs, and I think it looks very professional.

But for a quick and good looking lighting setup, try the three point lighting script in Blur's script pack. With some fine tuning, you can get very nice results with fast render times.

    Personally, I use both methods.

Yeah, I wouldn't even bother with the script. Just do a google search on three point lighting techniques, and you'll get the basics of it. One key light going right at your model, from somewhere near the camera, with shadows on. One fill light off to the side with a nice ambient color and low intensity. (You can actually put in two or more fill lights, of to each side of your model.) One light above or behind with ambient color, low intensity.

Easy, and quick rendering. As soon as you add the first light, the default lighting will be disabled.

Mental Ray does VERY good renders, just look through help files if you dont know how to activate it.
On light modifier check shadows, then select mental ray shadow map, scroll down to mental ray shadow map tab and adjust the map properties to your likeing.
On render window go to Indirect Illumination, enable GI, adjust average GI photons per light (if you see large ovals on your render then you need to increase it). And hit render.
If you have more time then you can enable Final Gather (in that case you dont need many GI photons).

    Hope it helps smile.gif

    Hey,
vassago: Thanx i will try both methods.

Fat_Assasin: Thanx, i figured if i placed any additional lights it would shut down the default one. For the input on regular screen grabs being ok is helpful when i create a website. I haven't tried the blur plugin you drirected me to but, i will get around to testing it out.
Good plug with your site also wink.gif.
Nice work good to hear you have found a job opening and snatched it up.

Ryno:I googled it and came up with one site that i found interesting. Googleing usually works but i haven't been to the big green place in a while so i thought i'd check out the new forum board:). Actually found that very one your discribing in your post.
By any chance did they use an alien for the example?

Toomas:I'll need to check out Mental Ray.
Working with the tutorials would be interesting.
Final gather sounds sweet all these new goodies and not enough time:(.

    Thanx again all...

If anyone cares to put up their reels that would be sweet.
If not could we get into a discussion on how you all created your reels.

I would love to create a standing area for the models so it isn't so dull when they turn around. =/
