Fund-raising ideas?

hey guys
Was wondering if you guys have any ideas for fund-raising activities??
Its to go towards a memorial for a friend who died almost this time last year of cancer at the age of just 17.
we are making a sclupture to be put on a wall of the art block at (now) our old school as his main thing was art,we are doing everything (designing,fundraising and contacting people etc) ourselves,apart from of course the making.
The school isn't willing to put tomuch money towards it and the design hasn't been finalised but we want to raise about 1000pounds (approx 2000 dollars) to be on the save side,any money leaved over we will donate to cancer research.
We have had the idea of selling art work at a kind of acution but im not sure anyone would wnat to by say my art work cos its an eye sore
....
We also if possible like to get local buissneses involved if possible.
other ideas include a gig of local bands but that might be difficult as many bands have now gone to university.
more exstreme ideas have been walking to Oxford,or even birmingham and running round the village naked,hoping people would pay for us to stop it

Try contacting a local known artist or a college art professor as they may know of some organizations that you can try.
