I'm reviving a dead project, mainly because QuakeSRC.org and some others are interested in it, and days are getting closer to q3a's source release.
It's basically a free GPL'd from-scratch recreation of Quake III Arena, currently in preperation stages (The source isn't out yet, and i'm using q3fusion for the engine at the moment, so I can't make "official" releases yet)

I'm sure alot of you are still proficient in q3a modeling, animating and skinning :P The only additional rules (other than the usual 800-1200 tri budget and 256x256 textures) are that you should also provide your "source" files, as in your .max, .psd, or whatever that's done to produce the md3 and tga, and don't use Steed's bips. (authorship/gpl issues there)
There's no main site yet though but i'll make one once my tbird is stable.

Yeah there's null textures everywhere, so what :P It's 7mb so far and i've only just (re)started.

How so? Doing from scratch with different art concepts, and on a new license? It isn't illegal. If you think it is, you might as well hate Open Quartz and FreeDOOM to death. Remember that Q3A's source code (engine and VM) is going GPL someday soon, as Carmack said, and with that source, we could have a fully open Q3A

And there's some engines already out there that can support Q3A's stuff, like QbismFusion and q3fusion (which I am using), and they're GPL open sourced as well.
And if you make all different then i fail to see how its RECREATION.
I fail to see who would need it, anyone who wants to play Q3 can just buy it for like $5, serious mods have their own content anyways, for small mods its not worth to d/l all the crap over and over again better make it for Q3.

"adding to the gameplay" isn't intended to be one of the project goals, and there's already some mods that can do both.
Actually why recreate all the stuff? Just look for maps/models that only use custom content (or can easily modified to only do so) and ask the authors. I bet most of them wouldn't mind.
All I can contribute are a few tree map-models for quake3, but you are free to use them for non commercial stuff.
Btw, some free licenses, like simple "non-commercial public domain" isn't exactly GPL compliant because GPL items are usually sold commercially on linux software bundle cd's or so.
Some others (not here though ) got interested again in the project and i've been working on it in the past 2 days.

Do you know why they rejected it last time? Usually is would be because they think it is vapour ware, or the licencing is unclear. Certainly before the engine was GPL'd along with the tools, the licencing would have been unclear.
Freshmeat doesn't really help if I understand correctly - it is more of an advertising service. This project really needs a source code repository. Last thing you need at the moment is a lot of advertising - the downloads would kill your bandwidth.

This project is still going yes, the weapons are pretty much underway. Right now all we NEED (yes, seriously need) for models is:
- A new gauntlet (Buzzsaw thing)
- A new machinegun (which has a spinning barrel of course)
- A new grenade launcher (mine sucks teh arse)
- A new railgun (with a light for ready indication)
- A new BFG10k (with a spinning "gear" barrel possibly)
- A skinner for the above guns.
- A Sarge-esque player? Right now in sarge's place is an old old gargoyle model.
Oh by the way, the project has been submitted to Gna!.

Right now the current focus is to finish up the weapons and get some maps in (i'll just convert a few Free Software licensed .map files over for now since i suck at mapping). I'll probably want a new rocket launcher the most.
