Hey here's my new project. It's vulcan raven from Metal Gear solid. Special thanks to Killing people for the ear.
Ill post the rest when I get it done. Should be soon since Im pretty motivated to finish it.
usagi:Yeah he's supposed to be inuit eskimo. But he sort of came out black huh? Could also be the fact that max is doing a weird "fisheye" camera effect in the render, anyone know how to turn that off? The face is in a neutral positon, I plan on doing some facial animation with him. Thanks for the crit.
snemmy : yeah I plan on fiddleing with the tattoos a bit more.
His face looks a bit too soft, rounded, and his expression too "dumb" to be honest with you. The face also looks too thin and tall. Try widening the face and cutting down on the monster chin a bit. And yes, he was shaman.
native american makes a lot more sense, still he looked black in mgs
i think it would be really cool if you got some reference pictures and made him look inuit, as sort of a different take on him
i also just noticed that his ears could use a bit of work. not anatomically, but they dont look as finished as everything else. also looking at it again the teeth look really nice for some reason
Thanks for the replies guys. I have the Mcfarlane action figure, and quite honestly His face is fugly. I dont know but I wanted to do Vulcan Raven Some Justice, make him a bit handsome. I never thought he was really that bad a guy, He was just a soldier on the wrong side, I bet under different circumstances He and Snake could be buddies.
Also i must say He is one of my all time best boss battles.
The work in progress goes on....
Those are some trippi proportions. You might want to add some bulk to his arms so they don't look quite so out of place.
It might be nice to get some degree of inuit appearance in there, even if you want to diverge from the original concept, particularly given its something a bit different to the normal white action man.
I made a little drawover for the upper body because I feel it's lacking the bulk Raven had in the game.
As you can see I bulked up the arms and added a little bit of thickness around the torso. The only other aspect of the model that is bothering me are the boots. They seem very out of proportion with the legs.
I think a darker skin tone would help making your model look more like the original - your changes to his face are okay although he should appear more brute-ish (even if you want him to be more handsome) - his front is way too high; looks a bit like a conehead IMHO. Make that shorter as it helps to establish the brute-look especially. And the arms are too tiny for a monster like him!
I however already know that he will look very nice when done - just a feeling!
The arms are way to skinny when compared to the toy, they need more bulk, especially the forearms. His ribs are way to spread out, and should only slightly bulge out. Also his face doesn't match the angry expression shown in the toy. His trapezius muscles (btw neck and shoulder) is too squashed down and could be lengthened a bit more. The texture could use some deeper color shadows are well, its a bit too red, throw some blue mixed with grey tones in there. It's coming along nicely.
Rendering of old polished leather on boots is interesting, but it's perhaps a bit too saturated, try to fix it or to create other areas that catch the eye like this, because we shouldn't focus on his boots I guess
(I think my english is far from understandable, I hope you get a bit of the idea huhu)
Slaughter, Crylar: Thanks,Im glad you guys like it so far.I like the big feet. I shrunk the down and it just didnt look right. I feel like he needs Big feet.
Steakkhouse: yes.
Brice Vandemoortele : I know exactly what you mean. I feel like the boots might have parts that are too saturated as well. I might need to desaturate a bit.
Echelon-IV: Thanks, glad you like. Yeah the minigun barrels are separate I need to adjust the smoothing groups.
Loving the nice translucent quality of the fleshy bits so far. Maybe you could add some dirt/variations here and there? I don't know much about MGS3 but according to this it seems like the action takes place in jungle environments, right?
There might be a bit too much of contrast on the leather boots tho. But besides that, he kicks some ass! Great job

anyways it looks good, though i think he would benefit from a more angry expression
also lower the opacity on the tatoos a tiny bit to let some skin detail show through. right now it looks more painted on than in the skin
snemmy : yeah I plan on fiddleing with the tattoos a bit more.
malcolm : yeah he's an eskimo shaman.
Though in the game he doesn't have eyebrows, here is the official art from the MGS game.
I think it would look better with no eyebrows.

Come on. You know you want to.
other then that, the model AND skin rocks my socks
adjusted the arms and feet.

I really love the skin though, great job on that.

Whaddaya THink?
I also think the feet are too big tho...
your model is uber cool, even though he doesn't look as 'mindless grunt' as the one in the game.
The gatlinggun should be bigger.
