stupid mouse port

so the other day i was surfing the internet, and then my mouse stops working. i look down at it, and the cord was disconnected somehow, so i went and got a spare balled mouse, and it worked for a bit, then it stopped alltogether. i turned off the computer, turned it on later that day and it worked again. then it stopped. today it was working for half an hour or so, then it stopped working again. i think the port may be blown, but i have no way to know until i get a new usb mouse tomorrow or something. does anyone know if there is some way i can fix this? for the time being i'm stuck on this old computer (p3 866 mhz, 512 200mhz ram, windows 2000. i say it's old but it probably seems too powerful to cheapalert.)
