Anybody seen this movie yet?
I think that the trailer was posted here a while ago.

I bought the dvd on eBay and watched it last night and though it was excellent.
The story is very good and original and the design of everything in it is so nicely done and has a very old industrial dirtly look. Every shot is eye candy.
The movie is pretty long and has a lot of depth of the characters, quite a bit of dialogue but well balanced with action so it wasn't boring for a minute. I sometimes find this with Asian movies.
Besides that the actors really fit the parts and they've used some nice famous classical music that works well.
The CG isn't always perfect in the way that it's very obvious but that never bothered me.

I read that the "Go Fish Pictures" specialty subdivision from DreamWorks has bought the domestic distribution right along with Ghost in the Shell 2 Innocence.

You can check out the trailer and some clips here:

Casshern is great. I watched it the other night and flipped out when i saw the scene where the guitar riff starts playing and he starts whoopin ass. The diffused look of the film kinda got to me in some scenes, but overall I thought the effects were well done. I read that the film was shot exclusively on blue/green screen with minimal live sets. This seems to be more and more the trend in film and I'm liking it. Especially when it is done as well as it is in this movie.

I've been waiting for this to come out stateside for nearly a year. But I am not going to pay $60.00 for a DVD off of Amazon Japan. If i waitd a year I can wait a little longer.

Scott, you are waiting for the U.S. distro? Are they doing a theatrical release? If so, I hope it's much faster than Miramax's release of shaolin soccer and that they don't butcher Casshern to cater to american audiences. Anyway, if you get to see it untouched you are in for a treat.

i'm sorry to say that i've seen half of it but i stopped watching halfway through. to be honest i was kinda bored. it's not that the visuals aren't breathtaking and gloriously colorful etc., but the whole story/plot is so operatic in tone and scope that the characters don't resonate for me, at all. it all kinda seems like watching one long final fantasy cutscene, and i'm just not a final fantasy fan. i'm quite keen on films that are beautifully designed and shot, but not if the story itself isn't compelling....

that having been said i will reserve final judgement until i finish watching it. my current favorite of late would be GitS:I, though--that really was a combination of glorious visuals and meaty story.

Scott, I paid $17.99 for the DVD with english subs on eBay and there were many more blush.gif

Gauss, I hear you about the "operatic tone" but that didn't bother me a lot. To me that's kind of a given with Japanese movies. You missed some nice action at the end though smile.gif

GitS2:Innocence was excellent. Now I can't wait for the new Appleseed movie.

I paid for the legitimate 3-disc release. Paired it up with a couple of other DVDs that haven't been released, so naturally I haven't seen it yet since I don't have it but I'm pretty sure it'll be worth it, at least visually.
And even if it isn't I'm a fan of making of-documentaries - especially japanese ones, so I'm sure I'll get my money's worth with the official release (not that I'd consider a bootleg even if I'd want it cheaper..).

Fabool, let me know how the xtras are in that set. I'm really thinking of ordering it. I always enjoy making of featurettes and I'm sure the ones on the techniques used in this film won't disappoint. Now if only Cinefex would pick up some Asian films.
