Sketchbook: Jade Liaw

This collection shows a variety of renders from my Environment Diorama, of which I composed from a webcomic series idea. This floating island in the sky is meant to be the main character's mental space, a place inside their mind for all of their individual traits to interact. The overall composition was meant to be whimsical, dreamy, and overall stylized to maintain the imagination.

This project was all about taking a 2D concept and transforming it into a 3D render to the best of my ability; and while my initial concept was too easy, I almost overshot in difficulty with Nurgle the Great Unclean One. I do believe I managed to get the concept communicated, but in the future would perhaps choose something a little less ambitious when using a program I'm not as confident with, such as ZBrush.

This project was focused on taking a prop design we could find from a viable artist and translating the concept into 3D as a Hero Prop. I chose a lantern with a cute heart motif. I feel like I accomplished the idea of transforming the prop into a model that would be seen often on screen in a game and utilizing a low poly count with a high-resolution texture to mimic depth and non-existent material was fun.

The final project of this semester was focused on recreating an environment from reference, of which I chose a part of the subway environment from Stray. Unlike my previous project related to an environment, there was a clear number of things to do and guidelines for how to set up the scene. The sheer number of items to work on for my kit was overwhelming at first, and eventually I had to omit some of the minor ones, but I believe I pulled off a similar vibe with enough of the original work to be recognizable.
