[Hiring] Unity XR Developer – Contract (Remote, Quest 3, Robot Simulation, Paid Trial)

Hi! We're a small, experienced design-led team building a physical home robot, and we're looking for a Unity XR developer to help us build a high-fidelity simulation and control environment using Meta Quest headsets. We're starting with a short, paid trial project, and if it's a good fit, we'd love to continue working together.


Available Position and Job Description

  We're hiring a **freelance Unity XR developer** to help build an internal simulation and telepresence tool. This is a **contract role** (remote, part-time OK), beginning with a **short trial project** to establish fit and collaboration style. If things go well, we're interested in longer-term work together.

  The project involves building a **VR/MR experience** that allows real-time control and observation of a custom humanoid robot via Meta Quest headsets, starting with a working MVP prototype.

What We're Looking For

  Required:
• Unity (2022+ preferred) with URP and OpenXR
• Experience developing for Meta Quest 2 or 3
• Familiarity with XR Interaction Toolkit and/or Oculus Integration SDK
• Comfortable with rigged models, inverse kinematics (IK), and animation logic
• Strong C# skills and experience with clean Unity project architecture


Bonus experience:
• Blender-to-Unity rigging workflows
• Recording and playback systems
• Passthrough AR and controller tracking
• Normcore or Photon for multi-user environments

You should be:
• A solo developer (not part of a team/studio)
• Comfortable working independently and asking good questions
• Thoughtful about UX and implementation details
• Available to begin a short trial in the next 1--2 weeks


The Company and Mission

We're a small team of designers and engineers developing a new kind of home robot. Our focus is on thoughtful interaction, trust, and user experience. This Unity app is a critical tool for simulating robot behavior, testing control inputs, and prototyping UI -- all before integrating with the real hardware.


Progress So Far

We're early but focused:
• A complete robot model rigged in Blender
• Clear roadmap and spec for the MVP
• Internal team with Unity, CAD, and hardware expertise
• We're ready to build -- just need help bringing the simulation to life


MVP Project Scope

The initial trial and MVP will include:
• First-person robot control using Meta Quest controllers with IK
• Support for modular robot "shells" on rigged bones
• Record and playback of motion sequences
• Simple 3D VR room for scale reference (non-interactive)
• Toggleable passthrough mode in MR
