Hello
everyone,
I am an Asian and a self-taught 3D modeler with 10 years of experience. I
received my green card around mid-2024, and I’m relocated to New York. I
feel like I’m starting a new life from scratch here.
I have been in the USA for six months now, and I’m actively looking for
job opportunities. I would really appreciate any advice you can share. I
don’t have any formal certifications, so I’m wondering—do I need to
enroll in a 3D animation school in the U.S. to improve my chances?
Any tips and tricks on job opportunities or where and how to start my
job search would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a million!

Formal education (certs and degrees) really only help if you need it for a green card (which you have) or working in higher education as a teacher. So then, finding a job comes down to Portfolio, People and Persistence.
For the first bit, post your portfolio here so you can get feedback on it. For the second bit, a big advantage of living in a large city is access to all kinds of people, art and culture. I'd recommend looking for user groups, game jams or other gatherings of folks that may work in industries and fields you are interested in. For the last bit, you gotta keep trying. Apply, fail, improve the portfolio and try again. Some people will say you need to be lucky to break into the industry, but luck exists at the intersection of persistence and hard work! You may need to find work outside your desired industry or take on some smaller freelance jobs to pay the bills until you land a permanent role.
Good luck!
