Currently working on bringing this concept into 3D for my showreel assignment at university - since it has a harder due date I've been focusing more on trying to finish it than my little workshop project for the time being :]
The
original concept art is by Sylvain Sarrailh for Forest of Liars and is being reproduced in 3D with permission.
I want to have a piece in my portfolio that showcases an ability to work from a concept and produce a full environment while demonstrating my particular interest in foliage and vegetation specialisation, so I thought it would be a good choice
There are still a lot of things that need to be polished and refined, mainly the statue sculpt and fullness of the foliage which is what I'm going to focus on this week. I'll also be generating some more trunks in SpeedTree for more tree variations (the bushes are just planes that have been manually put together in Maya).
Materials will get some more detailed work down the line as well, especially the moss and stone for the statue - planning to vertex paint the moss onto it based off feedback from my tutor.
Any feedback is much appreciated! The fluffiness of the foliage is my main struggle at the moment (not sure if I just need to add more cards or tweak the shader a bit, which is just a material I made following some tutorials)

Finalised a high poly for the statue and put it into the scene. Working on textures in Substance Painter and painted on rough placements for the moss (planning to vertex paint a proper material onto the statue in Unreal once I make it)
Trying to figure out how to soften the shadows so they're less harsh and closer to the concept, I've tried playing with the indirect intensity setting in both the skylight and directional light to no avail :[
