Grass for mobile help

I've been searching around for a bit today, but can someone help me figure out the best way to make grass for mobile? I know overdraw is an issue, but so is polycount. So what is my best option here? Grass on planes thats cut as close to the alpha as possible to cut down on overdraw? Or individual grass meshes for each blade like they do in Zelda BOTW? I dont need fields of grass for my game, only patches of maybe 5x5m at the most here and there. I know profiling is the only way to find out what works, but has anyone gotten away with doing grass the standard alpha cards way without too many overdraw issues?
