[Wip] Warhammer 40k Ork Huge Choppa

Continuing my Warhammer 40k Ork weapon fan project. Now onto a Huge Choppa. Based on Official concept art. I have made some changes to the design thanks to feedback from discord Servers.

Currently near the end of the sculpting phase in ZBrush, looking to move onto retop in Maya once ready.

(Original Concept Art, Credit to original artist, if anyone knows who that is please enlighten me!)

20/07/24 - With feedback, changed the handle grip to a simpler design with no gaps. May need a go over to add more texture or could leave until Substance Painter. Also increased Axe head size to better suit a one handed weapon.

UPDATE: Hi Im still working on this model, had some changes happen (and lost some saves putting me back, oops...) so couldn't focus on modelling as much as I wished to. Now things have settled I want to get back on track! About two-thirds through retopology at this point
I also need to look into ways that can help me to speed up retopology or atleast be more time efficient, its the part that I struggle most to get through at the moment.

Finally got Retop to a place im happy with to move onto UVing. The Ribbed tubing in the centre caused the biggest issue for me, took a few tries to get right. Now onto UVing!

Started Uving today, used Mayas auto layout option as I want to test bake before refining Uving (if refining is needed). Looking forward to texturing if testing works out :)

I would suggest using Maya's Auto layout with horizontal or vertical orientation turned on, plus using the Straighten UVs (under Unfold).
Straightened UVs with either vertical or horizontal orientation help with aliasing in baked maps.

    The sculpt looks cool :)

Ah! Very helpful, thank you :)
Just realised I havent retoped the spikes so I'll need to relayout anyways :persevere: Any other tips on getting a good bake in Substance Painter?

Oh yeah, for sure. Baking is difficult and there are loads of things you should keep in mind.

Pieces like these should be laid out vert/horiz and straightened for the same reason as I mentioned above. Its easy to do this by selecting the faces, going UV Editor > Modify > Unitize, then selecting all the edges, and deselecting the edges you dont want, then sewing them together to create this pillar.

Also, for your low poly, make sure you soften all the edges, then in UV Editor > Select > Texture Borders, and harden those edges. UV island borders should be hardened, whereas the rest of the edges should be softened.

Amazing thanks again! That last tip will save me soo much time as I was hardening and softening all the edges by hand. :+1:

Finished the retop on the spikes on the Choppa head. Next to do is the spikes retop on the centre ring.

Still working on Uving. Experimented with some YouTube tutorials on the matter and I've found a way that currently works for me, in combination with tips from above. Got a few more pieces to go before completion :)
