Solid modeling vs NURBS

Hi guys,
Just curious, is there a distinction between the two?
As, for example, Rhino, though it has some basic boolean functionality, is clearly a NURBS modeler, whereas Plasticity uses another kernel, which is internally akin to dynamic booleans.
I have no experience with Solidworks and alike, but I reckon there's a difference between the two types of modeling.
What are your thoughts?

I found some interesting info, that Plasticity uses Parasolid, which internally keeps parametric primitives, making it much more precise for some miniscule engineering tasks.
Also Parasolid gives the ability to alter forms arter some operations, such as booleans, fillets/chamfers.
RHinon, also can save some parameters, akin to modifier stack, but not as much. It has some benefits of easier vertex control from my experience
