3ds max bone constraint help

Hi all, thanks for reading! I am having some trouble rigging a face. I'm using this bone_end with a position constraint to help move it, but whenever I move the constraint, my bone's parent just kind of shrinks or extends diagonally instead of following the movement of my bone end, picture shown 

did I do something wrong? I expected the middle bone to follow wherever my bone end and dummy where at, but I don't know what happened, how can I fix this?  Thanks in advance!
