For my internship I make 3D scans. All scanned parts are (generally) the same shape, the only difference between captures is the background and how the object sits on the platform. Is there some sort of cookie cutter-esque cutout tool that lets me extract a predefined shape out of a 3d model scene/file? Or is it only possible to manually cutout the background/useless parts with blender/etc.?

longer answer : how easy it is depends greatly on how consistent the location/size/orientation etc is between scans
meshlab is probably the path of least resistance for meshes as dense as scans - its not a friendly package to operate but it is scriptable from python and very powerful
