Desk Lamp shadows.

I am wondering, is it possible to create a "half shadow" for a desk lamp?

Here's what I mean:

I have the mesh in two parts - the cover with faked glow via material (using bump offset and fresnel) with shadows on; the base of the lamp with lightbulb with shadows off.

The issue is, the cover is blocking the light fully, thus creating 100% shadow. Which is not what supposed to happen with a lamp like this. The cover should pass through some light.
How could I achieve this?
