i want to become an collectible statue sculptor but i dont know if i should do fanart, my original concepts or ask to reproduce someone else's concept.
not sell i would, it would serve more like a proof of capacity for my portfolio than anything else.
if someone wanted to buy my statue it would be wonderfull, but i am looking to get hired be other people, either by doing customs or oficial studio work.
For learning purposes surely doing fan art is great. I view this like learning to draw: At the beginning it is certainly easier to draw from reference. Try to get close to what you see and eventually see more.
Once you reached a certain level it will become easier to create and not just copy. Learning to use reference by doing fan art is a good start.
From what Ive heard, If your not looking to get hired, commissions, seem to be where the money is at. things like Deviant art and other communities' original characters etc.
If you still learning shouldn't really matter what you pick to work from so better pick something good !
When you start doing commission you be doing mostly fanart anyway ,might as well do few of this before hand also it will help with been notice ppl like what they know or if you work for a company that sell minis they will give you original concepts so, again you be working from someone else designs
As long as you could interpret concept art and do a good job out of it , it really shouldn't matter where its coming from

Too sell?
Safer to git gud making your own stuff, rather than infringe other people's work.

Well in that case here's a few insights from a fellow polycounter, that'll prove useful:
